Expert insights on kratom’s short and long-term effects

Kratom leaf powders, capsules, and extracts have soared in popularity across the West as an accessible means of enhancing mood, relieving pain, boosting energy, alleviating opioid withdrawal symptoms, and more.  But what are kratom’s actual short and long-term effects according to scientific research so far? In this article, we’ll turn to insights from leading kratom experts on what current studies report regarding the safety, efficacy, risks, and realistic benefits of regular use.

Professor Oliver grundmann- Kratom pharmacology expert

Professor Grundmann of the University Of Florida College Of Pharmacy studies the chemical components that give kratom its psychoactive properties such as mitragynine. His research aims to guide safe usage and regulation policies based on scientific data, not hysteria or misinformation. On kratom’s effects, Grundmann reports:

  • “In the short term, kratom acts as a psychostimulant at lower doses, increasing energy, sociability, and alertness. At higher doses, opioid-like pain-relieving and sedating qualities emerge similar to codeine or morphine as the primary agonist mitragynine binds to mu-opioid receptors in the brain. These painkilling effects make kratom country reviews useful for various acute and chronic pain conditions when used responsibly.”
  • “As for long-term effects with daily usage over many months or years, dependence develops leading to withdrawal upon cessation for heavy users. There are also risks at very high doses of seizures. Contaminated products raise safety issues due to a lack of oversight during harvesting and manufacturing processes. Overall, however, emerging research suggests reasonable safety comparable to many over-the-counter drugs when used in moderation.”
  • To maximize benefits and avoid potential long-term issues, Grundmann advises rotating kratom strains, keeping daily dosages below 10 grams, staying hydrated, and taking regular tolerance breaks. He also stresses the importance of purchasing pure lab-tested products from reputable transparent vendors.

Andrew turner – Ethno botanical researcher

As an advocate working to preserve kratom’s legal accessibility, Turner has spent over a decade analysing indigenous use practices and emerging scientific insights regarding the Mitragyna speciosa plant. His grassroots research aims to replicate benefits and avoid pitfalls based on lessons handed down through generations of traditional use cases. Turner reports:

  1. “Used respectfully as ancestral cultures did for millennia, kratom bears negligible risks and many upsides for those who wish to subtly enhance productivity, sensory pleasure, and rest according to my and others’ findings.”
  2. “In the short term as an occasional boost, remain mild – stomach upset, dizziness or headaches mainly – in those practicing moderation and properly hydrating.”
  3. “For long-term daily consumption, dependence manifests physically in sensitive individuals beyond 9-12 months resulting in fatigue, mood swings, or flu-like discomfort for a few days up to a week or two upon cessation. Avoiding high doses, regularly cycling varieties and adherence to one month on, one week off protocol prevents significant withdrawal.”

Turner concludes, “As with any mind-altering substance from caffeine to cannabis, abstinence breaks prevent building tolerance long term. But when used judiciously by healthy adults, none of the kratom’s naturally derived compounds appear to engender worrisome side effects over multi-year monitoring. Fear mongering agenda-driven FDA warnings remain spacious upon current inspection.”
